concept art research

What is concept art?

Concept art is an illustration where the purpose is to design a visual representation from the clients ideas, for games, animation, films, comic books etc. When the concept artists have design'd lots of different characters, planets, buildings, objects etc they and the team choose final designs which are then perfected using photoshop and sent to the 3D animaters.
Where did concept art originate from?
I think that concept art originated from car designs and engins etc,and old animation programs from the early 1990's.
Types of concept art
I have been reasearching concept art and all the different styles of it:
Realistic
Science fiction

Fantasy

Steam punk

Abstract

2D&3D etc
I have always liked Science fiction and Fantasy,so i thought i would reasearch some of the other styles and see what i think of them.I seemed to like Reaistic and 2D&3D the most.
Below is a piece of 2D art that i found funny.
I like this picture because the astronaut is unaware of the mother or father of the baby alien hes about to sqaush. You can see the mother ships in the background which i dont think looks very good because of the lack of detail put into them.I like the fact that the astronaut has the american flag in his hand  the  while the alien also has a flag of his own.

The picture below is fantasy which is my faviroute type of art.
I like this picture because its amazingly detailed, the fire, ashes and rocks personally catch my eye.
The only thing i think lacked is the tree, theres not as much detail as everything else i think the artist was just lazy at that point.

Didgital artists and graphic designers etc use "thumb nail sketches".Thumbnail sketches are small sketches on a piece of paper, they are more or less doodles but with a lot more detail.
Concept artists use graphic tablets, graphic taplets our like normal tablets but you can hand draw on them and trace pictures useing an attached stylus. when the drawing or tracing is finished the quality looks amazing.

Matte painting is to paint a representation of a landscape used mainly in movies.
This is mainly because it would be basicaly impossible and be to expensive to build.

Dan Luvisi:

Dan Luvisi is a digital concept artist working in the film, game and comic book industry.he also does Realistic concept art, from what i have seen of his work he seems to enjoy drawing characters from movies, but also likes creating his own characters. He has also worked on Batman and Superman with DC comics.
I have never looked into concept art much so i never really knew about it, but when i knew what it was i started doing research and came across Dan Luvisi i never knew it was possible to create posters that realistically. Its amazing how much detail that is put into his characters ; i personally am not good with drawing objects and characters realistically, even on photoshop (which i don't know much about) I'm not very good but that's why he inspires me because he is very good at realistic concept art, if i want to be a concept artist in the future i want my style to be similar to his.

'Dan Luvisi is known for his extremely versatile style in both illustration approach, as well as categories. Besides concept illustrations, Luvisi has become an expert in Character & Costume Design, Matte Paintings, Storyboards, Poster & Packaging Design and generally welcomes new challenges within his field. Future skills he intends to add to his roster, as time in his hectic schedule will allow for it, include 3D modelling with Z-Brush and Mud Box, Maya, as well as physical sculpture and canvas painting.'

i got that information above from facebook : http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dan-LuVisi/216363645053067?sk=wall#!/pages/Dan-LuVisi/216363645053067?sk=info

More examples of his work :

This poster caught my eye mostly because the style of it, the woman looks realistic but everything around her is a cartoon art kind of style which i think is very creative, I've never seen a piece of art like that. Also her face and tattoos look so realistic, its amazing how Dan Lvisi has made it like that. This poster is not similar to mine, my style is all the same but he has two styles and his poster has alot more detail. The cartoon background looks very simple but it probably was hard with the light and shading especially around the clouds.

I really like this detailed poster because its so powerful, his facial expression and all the blood really adds effect. He looks angry and like hes shouting whilst being in pain from the fragment of glass that are cutting his face and body. His fists are clenched where he is so angry but i think they don't look quite as realistic as the rest of his body. Also this is one of those posters that makes you want to know whats happening in front of the character because theres a lot of different things that could be happening: there could be an exploding building that has people he cares about in it, an enemy fighting him, there could be some one jumping through a glass window towards him, etc.

This is one of my favourite pieces of Dan Luvisi's work, i just think its so creative and realistic. I like the eyes and the mouth the most, its strange how you can only see half of the eye on the left. The mouth only has the tusk like teeth in the four corners with only six teeth actually in the mouth. All the red veins make the mouth look real ans the slim stuff from his teeth was a nice touch. Also the head and pattern is very interesting, it almost shows that it is a fish because its not very obvious without that pattern and the reflection of the sun on the creatures head.

I like this poster because it is very serious because of the blood and the fact that hes being shot at but its got a bit of humour as theres a no guns sign above the characters head that has a bullet hole thought it. Another interesting thing about this poster is all the tiny details that you probably will only noticed if you gave it a second look, for example theres white chalk markings where hes counted in fives as if hes keeping track of the amount of people he's killed, hes got plenty of amunition and the chainsaw has blood dripping from it showing thats hes just used it and in the other hand it looks like something that would scold you, i think that the coloured things coming out of his pocket are skittles which is quite funny because you wouldnt expect someone like that carrieing round sweets( it also adds colour to the picture). Also you can see that there are a few bullets have hit him but he doest seem to be hurt, probably because of the armour he has on ; he has a number and some writing on his helmet so that suggests that he works for someone else and not himself.  I think that there is alot to keep you looking at this poster.

Akira Toriyama:

Akira Toriyama is a Japanese manga artist and game artist known mostly for his creation of Dr. Slump in 1980 and Dragon Ball in 1984. I am personally a big fan of Akira Toriyamas work, I like the Dragon ball series and since i started i mainly drawing i only focused on drawing the Dragon ball style and that's all I'm really good at but that's why my game isn't Japanese manga style; because i wanted to prove to my self that i can draw in a different style just as good.

These are lots of sketches of a character of Dragon ball, there are three series: Dragon ball, Dragon ball z and Dragon ball gt and that's him through the three series getting older. I would really like to start doing this because Akira Toriyama drawn the character from different angles, just his head and done annotation(even know can't tell what hes wrote because Akira has wrote it in Japanese).

DBZ the end

Above is a poster of all the Dragonball z characters at the end of the series. I like this poster because you can see all the characters together, you dont realise how many characters there are untill you see them like this, you rarely see them altogether in the show, i would like to do some thing simaliar to this for my game maybe adding a few new interesting characters to make it more effective.

So in conclusion even thou Dan Luvisi and Akira Toriyama have completely different styles of concept art i like them both, Akira Toriyama for his style of drawing manga and Dan Luvisi for his realism. After researching these artists I have decided to do a few things for my game, one is to do sketches like Akira Toriyama and draw several sketches of a character  from different angles, two is to do a poster with lots of characters on like Akira Toriyama and third is to draw realistically like Dan Luvisi.

evaluation of my concept art ideas

This my final concept art poster, i do like this poster but i know i could improve it more. For example i could have added more effects but i don't know much about photo shop so i would of had to learn alot and i didn't have time. Also this wasn't my first poster for this unit, i originally had a different poster but i found it boring and wanted the characters to be doing something to make it interesting.
I know the lightning doesn't look realistic but i got t from a quick tutorial on  youtube again if i had more time i would have tried to make it better. another thing wrong was the Max's hand (bottom right hand corner) shouldn't look like that, its on a weird angle. I made the same mistake with rose's hand( bottom left).

I enjoyed developing my characters, even though it took a long time i enjoyed the experience. I feel that i spent to much time developing one of my characters max, compared to the other two i clearly spent more time with that character. The problem was that i couldn't picture that character as easy as the others, i started of with an original idea but through my frustration i went off it and started to draw my character in more of an anime style without realising; and because my sketches were not realistic (mostly to do with the way i drawn there body's) i started doing research on how to draw the human body, from there it was easier to envision that character. Because in between developing the character Max (before i learnt how to draw the human body) i done a few sketches of Rose but wasn't happy with them so i left developing her for a while and carried on with Max. When i finished Max's design i done her design which was easier now i could draw the human body and only took a few sketches. I'm disappointed in how much i developed the good character Angel, i only done a few sketches but they say the rival is probably one of the most important characters to develop.

The story and game:

The game starts with the main character (girl or boy you choose) gets kicked out of their house because their super powers kick in and almost destroyed the house out of anger after finding out they were adopted but it wasn’t only that that got them kicked out, it was because the foster parents could see that they were becoming evil (The boy has super strength and girl has super speed and they can both fly)
The background of the game is on the year the boy or girl was born his or her home planet was being invaded so his or her parents pushed him or her into an escape pod on course to earth. The parents planed to stay and fight and hopefully see their son or daughter again but they never did as their home planet was destroyed.
The story is after the main character gets kicked out of their house they run into some super heroes and tries fighting them but gets knocked out. They then wake up in a house and meets someone named master ken who is 120 years old and has missed out on his chance to take over the world so he wants to pass his knowledge onto them and train them for three years for them to become strong and master their powers. Then after the training they set out to take over the planet.

The key features are that the game is an open world super villain game. The goals are to destroy/takeover the word but first destroy every super hero on it! The genre is open world action adventure. It will be on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC
